Dynamic v. Static Stretching

Dynamic Stretching means holding a stretch at the "end range of motion" only for a few seconds or gently and smoothly moving into and out of it.  It is contrasted with Static Stretching, which is holding a stretch for 10 seconds or more.  Studies have found that Static Stretching prior to exercise can decrease strength and increase risk of injury whereas Dynamic Stretching helps to improve the range of motion necessary for the type of exercise you are planning to undertake.  We recommend 5-15 minutes of moderately strenuous Dynamic stretching prior to exercise.
